Gunther Christian Heeren of Bend died September 5, 2017. He was 94 years old. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Heeren was born on April 21, 1923 in Hannover, Germany to Christian and Frieda (Hogrefe) Heeren. He came to this country with his parents in 1924. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1941. He served with the 10th Mountain Division Co. B, 86th Inf. Regt. During WWII from 1943 to 1946. He attained the rank of S/Sgt. and received the bronze star and the combat infantry badge. After the war he completed his education by graduating from the University of Michigan in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. His forestry career was with the Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs working on the Warm Springs and Colvlle Washington Indian Reservations. He retired in 1978 as Forest Manager of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation,. Mr. Heeren married Fern Brooks in Bend, Oregon on June 25, 1949. Survivors include his wife, Fern, of Bend, two daughters, Gretchen Makinson of Richland, WA and Heidi Carpinella of Prineville, OR and three sons, Paul of Leavenworth, WA, Karl of Crooked River Ranch, OR, Glenn of Richland, OR, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
