Eleanor Kanoa Noel Eleanor Kanoa Noel, beloved by generations of her family, passed from this life on Jan. 31, 2013, in McLeansboro, IL, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born Sept. 2, 1933, to parents Malcore and Rose Kanoa on the island of Hawaii. Eleanor served her country as a corporal in the U.S. Marines and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. After marrying Robert Noel in 1954, she moved to the Chicago area and eventually to Carpentersville, IL, where she gave lessons in hula and ukulele. A longtime resident of Carpentersville, Eleanor raised her five children in the suburb and worked 23 years at K-Mart. After retiring in 1993, Eleanor and Robert traveled across the country for several years before settling in McLeansboro. She was a member of New Life Assembly of God Church and, in her final years, a resident of Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center. Eleanor is survived by her husband and children, Leona Whiting-Novack (Mark), Darlene Hammonn (Gary), Robert Noel, Donna Johnson (Timothy) and Lynnetta Fleck (David); as well as 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Florence Fukui, Albert Canoa, William Kanoa (Dorothy), Jeanne Nases (Larry), Lawrence Kanoa (Elizabeth), Beatrice DeLa Cruz (Vicente), Mildred Yamanouchi (George), Charles Kanoa (Sherley), Carol Oshiro (Bob) and Joyce Alfiler. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; siblings. Mary Lum and Roland Kanoa; grandson, James Lloyd Whiting; and great-granddaughter, Autum Noelani Valle. Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 4, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, IL. Eleanor will be laid to rest in a military service on Feb. 5, at Mound City Cemetery in McLeansboro. The family asks that donations be made to the Garfield Park Conservatory or the Alzheimer's Association.
