William L. "Bill" Swartzbaugh
William L. Swartzbaugh (Bill), formerly of Essex, CT passed away peacefully October 17, 2018 in Chester, CT. He was born in Toledo, OH, November 6, 1923.Bill's forty year career in academics included; Class of '45 Dartmouth College, BS; US Army, Philippines; Yale Divinity, BD; Ohio State University, Ph.D.; Prof. Denison University; Dean at U Pittsburgh, Amherst College, and Harvey Mudd College in CA. In 1947 Bill married the love of his life, Jean Addison; they raised three children who continue his love of outdoors and sailing. He moved to Essex in 1971 to pursue a career in as a Yacht broker. His wife Jean, passed away in 1989. Bill and Jean were devoted to family and service, Essex Garden Club, FEMA, Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity, Rotary, Essex Shad Bake, and Essex Yacht Club.Bill is predeceased by his wife Jean; four siblings, James, Charles, Katharine, and John; survived by son Bill Swartzbaugh Jr., daughter Jan (Swartzbaugh) Zajicek, Jim Swartzbaugh; four grandchildren; a great grandchild; his companion, Joan Sepessey and extended family.
