William H. Riley
William H. Riley, 89 Eltingville family man, retired as FDNY captain after 35 years William H. Riley, 89, of Eltingville, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019, at Staten Island University Hospital South, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Riley. William was a graduate of Manual Training High School. He worked at the J. F. Whalen Company from 1947-1948. William served in the U. S. Army at Camp Hood, Texas, in the Reserve and at Fort Eustis, Va., from September 1948 until June 1952. After serving in the Army he returned to work for the J. F. Whalen Company before joining the NYPD. In 1954 he began his 35 year career with the FDNY where he attained the rank of Captain. In 1989 he retired from Ladder Company 82 in Great Kills. In his spare time, William liked to golf, bowl and watch westerns on television. William was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Helen Riley; his sister, Irene Falkner; brother, Arthur Riley; and son-in-law, Lt. Glenn C. Perry, FDNY. He is survived by his five daughters: Maureen Mulligan (Joseph), Susan Riley (Thomas Fleming), Eileen Brown (Scott), Peggy Perry, Patricia Luyanda (Angel); his loving twin brother, Robert Riley; 13 grandchildren: Patricia and Joseph Mulligan, Helen and Madeleine Fleming, Scott, Daniel and Sean Brown, Glenn Perry, Meaghan Wilt, Caitlin Bender, Thomas Riley, Matthew and Aileen Luyanda; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are being handled by John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd., Staten Island, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Monday, June 3, 2019. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Child Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
