William D. Hobey
William D. Hobey, PhD, 82 Sutton - William D. Hobey, PhD, 82, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, died on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, in the University Campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center, after a short illness. His wife of 54 years, Ruth M. (Duquette) Hobey, died in 2015. He leaves three children: Francis A. "Frank" Hobey and his wife, Laurie J. (Shapiro) Hobey, of Rutland, Sharon E. Hobey and her partner, Rodger L. Comeau, of Worcester, and Janet I. Hobey of Seattle, WA; a grandson, Michael J. Hobey of Rutland; his fiancee, Gloria T. (Ballard) Millette, of Millbury; two sisters: Mary T. MacDonald of Peabody and Joan M. Bilodeau of Chester, NH; and nieces and nephews. In addition to Ruth, he was also predeceased by his parents, Neil W. and Mary (Hughes) Hobey and a brother, Neil J. Hobey. Born in Lynn on August 8, 1935, he was raised in Peabody and later lived in California and England before moving to Worcester in 1963; he moved to Sutton in 1969. Dr. Hobey graduated from Peabody High School in 1953 and earned a bachelor of science degree from Tufts University, Medford, in 1957. He earned his doctorate in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, in 1962, and spent a year of postgraduate study at Cambridge University, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Dr. Hobey joined the faculty of WPI in 1963, where he was engaged in teaching and research until his retirement. He was a member of Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Boylston, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and Assumption Catholic Parish, Millbury. Dr. Hobey's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 20, in Assumption Catholic Church, 10 Waters St., Millbury. Burial in St. Philip's Cemetery, Grafton, will follow the Mass. Relatives and friends are invited to meet with his family in Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Wednesday, before the Mass. Contributions in Dr. Hobey's memory should be made either to Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Dr., P.O. Box 598, Boylston, MA 01505 ( www.towerhillbg.org ) or to the Alzheimers Assn.
