Walter W. Shwayka
Walter Warren Shwayka of Southbury, CT, formerly of Westerly, R.I., passed away on August 8, 2018, at The Health Center at Pomperaug Woods. Walter was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Beverly C. Shwayka, by his son, Peter Shwayka, and by his sister, Olga Stevenson. Walter was born on April 14, 1926, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Mary Stecyszyn Shwayka and Jaroslaw Shwayka. He graduated from Drexel University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, and went on to have a long career in plant engineering. He received his Professional Engineer certification in 1977, and retired from The Stanley Works in New Britain, CT, in 1989. Walter and Beverly raised their family in Bloomfield, CT, where they lived for 35 years before building their beloved retirement home in Shelter Harbor, Westerly, R.I. Walt, as he was known to family and friends, was an active volunteer throughout his life. He was a founding member and past treasurer of the Civitan Club in Bloomfield, and served on various committees at the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield, including chairing the Church Council. Walt continued as a willing volunteer at Dunn's Corners Community Church Presbyterian in Westerly throughout his 80's and into his 90's. Walt adored his grandchildren, and was immensely proud of all of them; he was thrilled to be able to meet his first great-grandchild a year ago. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Deborah Hunsberger (Peter) of Wilton, CT, his son, Stephen Shwayka (Pam) of Chontales, Costa Rica, his grandchildren, Christopher Shwayka of Pacifica, CA, Katherine Hunsberger of Brooklyn, NY, Spencer Hunsberger (Sarah) of New York, NY, and Heidi Hunsberger (Zach Krupp) of Darien, CT. He also leaves his great-granddaughter, Finley Hunsberger, whose visit brought joy to his final days. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, September 15, at Dunn's Corners Community Church Presbyterian. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dunn's Corners Community Church Presbyterian, 22 Post Road, Westerly, R.I. 02891. Munson Lovetere Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
