Richard Steil Berger
Richard Steil Berger Greenville Richard Steil Berger, 88 of Greenville passed away on October 11, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of the late Elmer S. and Elsie F. Berger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Steven Russell Berger and sister, Janet Kirshner. Richard completed his BS in 1950 at Stanford University where he founded Stanford's first Hillel chapter and served as its president. He went on to earn a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1954 from the Univ. of Wisconsin at Madison. Military service followed in 1954 with 2 years in the US Army working in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Branch. After his release from the Army, Richard spent 9 years with Shell Oil and 26 years with Phillips Fibers Corp. During his lifetime he supported many charities and gave freely of his time and knowledge to help others. He actively guided and participated in numerous organizations that advocate for community wellness and inclusiveness such as Alliance for Quality Education, Greenville Faith Communities United, Character Matters and many others. He will be remembered as a loving husband, a generous, supportive father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Freeda S. Berger; son, Eugene S. Berger and wife, Barbara; grandson, Aaron S. Berger; neice, Liz Kirshner Hirtenstein and nephews, Jonathan Kirshner and Leon Gurevitch.
