Richard Dick Edgar Deckert
Richard "Dick" Edgar Deckert, 86, of Erie, passed away Monday, September 3, 2018, at Edinboro Manor. He was born on May 16, 1932, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., son of the late Harold and Florence (Mosier) Dunn. Dick was employed as a writer and editor at the Erie Times-News; he began his career as a reporter and was promoted to City Editor and then World & News Editor, retiring in 1997. He was a longtime member of the Summit United Methodist Church and volunteer at the Perry Highway Fire Department with a rank of Assistant Chief. He enjoyed camping, reading, Scrabble, hiking, running, traveling, and hunting for flea market bargains. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (Sterner) Deckert; his brother, Edwin Deckert; and his granddaughter, Stephanie Deckert. He is survived by his children, Tricia Deckert of Waterford, Steven Deckert, Cindy Strange and Kathy Davis of Elkhart, Ind., Todd Deckert of Erie, Glenn Deckert of Marie, Ill., Deb Schoffstall (Tom) Mandan, N.D., Gary Deuvall (Susan) of Wall, Miss. and Kevin Deuvall (Penny) of Vancouver, Wash.; sister, Lucie Groczynski; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend the memorial service at Summit United Methodist Church, 1510 West Townhall Rd., Erie, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Tom Hoeke officiating.
