In memory of
Robert Joseph Mahar
Mahar, Robert Joseph GLENMONT Robert Mahar, 81 of Westport, passed away May 9, 2021, surrounded by loving family at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Glenmont following a brief illness. Born and raised in Albany, he was the son of the late Thomas J. Mahar and Isabella Skelly Mahar. After attending St. Anne's in Albany, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1957-1960, and in 1961, married the love of his life, Janice C. Mahar (nee Probst). With a growing family, Robert began an apprenticeship with Williams Press in Menands, he ultimately became a shift supervisor for printing operations at the New York State Department of Education. Not one for idle time, he also worked as groundskeeper for Albany MUNI, and served for the First Ward First District on the Albany Democratic Committee. Upon retirement, Robert took up a second career in sales at J.J. Curran & Son Inc, during which he discovered a passion for golfing. Robert frequently traveled, enjoying Caribbean cruises and bus tours of Europe with his wife and vacations in Orlando with family, making friends all the while. Later in life, Robert split his time between Lakeland, Fla. and Westport, where he maintained his own fairway and a large garden. He will be remembered for his quick wit, love of the outdoors, and penchant for practical jokes. Robert was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Janice Mahar; brothers, James (Janice) Mahar and Charles (Cheryl) Mahar; and sister Rosemary Schetzel. He leaves behind four children, Tracy (Jerome) Curran of Glenmont, Colleen Mahar of Albany, Robert (Marcy) Mahar Jr. of Delmar, and Bonnie (Michael) Smith of Wayne, Pa.; six grandchildren, Joseph (Brett) Curran, Seamus Curran, Walter Safford, Matthew Mahar, Caroline Mahar, and Christopher Smith; brothers, Thomas (Barbara) Mahar and Paul (Claire) Mahar; and countless relatives and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Robert's family on Wednesday, May 12, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany. Please only enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot driveway; masks and social distancing are required; and 45 visitors at a time will be allowed in the funeral home. Funeral services on Wednesday, May 12, at 10:30 a.m. in The Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St., Albany, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated.
