THOMAS POTTER
POTTER Thomas Phelps Potter (Age 82) On Friday, February 5, 2021, Thomas Phelps Potter peacefully passed away surrounded by family at his home in Haymarket, VA. He was born July 20, 1938 in Seer Green, Buckinghamshire, England. He immigrated to the United States with his parents through Ellis Island, New York on November 25, 1947. He grew up in Arlington, VA and graduated from Washington & Lee High School in 1956. He then attended two years of college at Shenandoah College, Dayton/Winchester, VA and two years at Cumberland College, Williamsburg, KY, completing his undergraduate degree in 1963. He received his Master's Degree as a Certified Travel Consultant from George Washington University in 1986. He was drafted into the US Army in the summer of 1963 and served on active duty for 11 months with the 3rd Armor Division and another 13 months with the 1st Calvary Division in Southeast Asia. He continued to serve an additional four years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He began his career in the travel industry in1966. Over a period of 20 years, he worked for United Airlines, Trans Caribbean Airways, National Airlines and Pan American World Airways. In January 1992, he created MidAtlantic Travel Marketing with his first client, Trafalgar Tours. Over the next 15 years he represented over 31 different travel companies, including Key Tours, Insight Tours, Amphitryon, Contiki, Thrifty Rental Cars, and Viking River cruises. He was also active in the Washington, DC Chapter of Bon Vivant, where he served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President. He was also a proud member of the Washington, DC SKAL Club. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively around the world, including trips to London, behind the Iron Curtain in Eastern Europe, China and countless other destinations. After 41 years, he retired in 2007. He was active in his community. He was his sons' Coach and was a role model for other young men in the Bailey's Cross Roads, VA community. He served 12 years on the church Vestry, where he led a number of community outreach programs serving hundreds of people in the community. Most recently, he was a proud member of Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, VA. He lived a full and robust life. He enjoyed sports, being a grandfather, spending time with family and traveling America and the world with his loving wife of 55 years, Joyce. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Humphrey Phelps Potter and Millicent Luticia Sims Potter. He was survived, for 10 days, by his wife, Joyce and his sons, Timothy E. (Kathryn) Potter of Warrenton, VA and Thomas Phelps (Connie) Potter, Jr. of Lovettsville, VA; grandchildren, Bryan Potter of Warrenton, VA, Brenna Potter of Joppa, MD, Nicholas, VA, Andrew and Klara Potter of Lovettsville, VA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 11 a.m., Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, VA. Private interment at Little Georgetown Cemetery, Broad Run, VA.
