In memory of
James Reese
REESE - James "Jim" Edward, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2021, surrounded by his family. Jim was born in New York and lived in Tampa, FL for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Kathryn and his sisters Kathleen "Morney" (the late Ted Logan) and Anne (the late Harry Schnepf). Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary "Peggy" Byrne; his daughter Patricia Reese and her son Aaron Lipkin; his daughter Margaret "Peg" Reese and her spouse Alison Salloum; and his son James Reese. He is also survived by his brothers Thomas (the late Joan) and David (Janet), his sister Geraldine (the late Robert Feindt), and many nieces and nephews. In addition to the Reese family, Jim loved his Byrne family in-laws. He is survived by his brother-in-law Neil (the late Phyllis), his sisters-in-law Brigid and Marian, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law James, Hugh (Judy), and Kevin (the late Barbara); mother-in-law Rose; and father-in law Joe. Jim graduated from Sayville High School and Valley Forge Military Academy. Jim enrolled in Fordham University on a football scholarship, but (with the help of Vince Lombardi) transferred to the University of Minnesota when Fordham dropped its football program. Jim played quarterback for the Golden Gophers, an experience he treasured his entire life, and he graduated with a degree in education in 1959. Jim worked for many years as a coach and teacher, had a long and successful career with IBM, and served in various government positions in New York and Florida, including Mayor of the Village of Patchogue, NY (1976-1980). Always active and engaged, in his retirement Jim published a weekly blog, "Coach's Corner: Reflections on Life and Football", which allowed him to share his knowledge, insights into sports (especially football), and stories about the many people he had come to know. Jim was always optimistic, upbeat, and saw the very best in people. He always had time to chat, never met a stranger, and was forever curious and seeking to learn. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Tampa General Hospital, which provided phenomenal and loving care to "Coach", or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

  • An entry in your loved one’s guest book, noting your contribution.
  • A listing in a memorial tree registry, showing that trees were planted in honor of your loved one.

Why Plant Trees?

This memorial tree planting will assist in reforestation, improve forest health and area watersheds, and provide a critical habitat for threatened and endangered wildlife.
