Frieda E. Nowland
Frieda E. Nowland Frieda E. Nowland, 87, of La Crosse passed away Friday, April 2, 2021, at her home. She was born in Spring Grove, Minn., July 2, 1933, to Palmer and Margit (Landsverk) Mindrum. She was baptized into the Christian faith at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church and confirmed at Houston Lutheran Church. She graduated from Houston High School in 1950 and from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1954. Later earned library credentials from UW-Whitewater and a master's degree in media from UW-La Crosse. Frieda married Ron Nowland in 1955, while he was a student at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. They had three children, Paul, Naomi, and Jonathan and later adopted Grace, when she was 10 years old. Over the years, in addition to raising her family, she was bookkeeper and assistant office manager at Shavex Corp in Glendale, Calif., private secretary to the sales manager at Telex Corp in St. Paul, taught social studies at Wanamingo, Minn., was librarian at Parker High School in Janesville, Wis., program director and volunteer coordinator at Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center at Coon Valley, and owned and operated the Lutheran Bookstore in downtown La Crosse for 13 years, before retiring in 2002. Volunteer involvement has included various duties at the churches her husband served in Hustler, Orfordville and Janesville, especially establishing several church libraries. In La Crosse, she served on the boards of Jail Ministry, Citizen Advocacy, Sons of Norway Wergeland Lodge, Norskedalen, Yggdrasil Society, Church Women United, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and its Women's organization, was vice president and news editor of the ELCA La Crosse Area Synod Women, in its early years and served on several committees of the ELCA La Crosse Area Synod. Interest and hobbies include reading, writing (especially family stories), crossword puzzles, cryptograms, traveling, bicycling, and helping Ron with his illustrated talks. Frieda is survived by her husband, Ron; children, Naomi (Scott Johnson) Nowland of Clear Lake, Iowa, Jonathan (Jody Newgaard) Nowland of Onalaska, and Grace McMichale of Frederick, Okla.; three grandchildren, Zachary, Rachel and Ronald; five great-grandchildren, Michelle, Haleigh, Braydon, Jacob, and Adriana Frieda; a brother, Ellert (Jean) Mindrum of Caledonia, Minn.; and 25 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Paul and his wife, Tami; three brothers, Paul, Alf and Arne Mindrum; a sister, Ellen Olson; and two nieces. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston St., La Crosse. Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen will officiate. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of service. Social distancing guidelines will be in effect and mask wearing will be mandatory. The Dickinson Family Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
