KAY GLEIM POITRAS HAINES CITY - Mrs. Kay Gleim Poitras, a resident of Haines City, FL, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at her home surrounded by her daughters. Kay was born January 8, 1931 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and was the beloved only child of the late David Ivan and Jennie Romaine (Gault) Gleim. Kay grew up in Mechanicsburg, PA, graduating from Mechanicsburg High School in 1949. She was Vice-President of her senior class and also voted Best Personality. She went on to graduate cum laude from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA., with a major in English. She moved to Winter Haven, FL., with her three daughters from Japan in 1967. She began substitute teaching at Elbert Elementary School while earning her Masters Degree in Elementary Education at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. Continuing at Elbert for a dozen years, she taught 3rd grade and was the reading and literacy specialist, followed by four years at a private school. Kay then created and supervised an after-school tutoring program called Homework House for six years. She was an active member of the Winter Haven Library Board and was the power behind a program called Excellence in Reading. Kay met her husband, Edward 'Ted' W. Poitras, in 1971 and they were married in January of 1973 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Auburndale where they were active members for close to 50 years. Kay and Ted were deeply committed to the St. Alban's community and a life of service, especially lifting up those in need. She will be rememberd as a kind, funny, hard working woman who lived her belief to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. A dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, Kay leaves behind a legacy of positivity, faith, family, friendship and love. She was preceded in death by her loving husband and her dear grandson, Connor Caracappa. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Julie Fleps, husband Peter and their sons, Jordan and Gus; Jill Freeman, husband Bruce, their son, Jack and daughters Kane and Sloane; Jennifer Caracappa, husband Glenn and their daughter Kate and son-in-law Alex. Due to the pandemic, a memorial service in Kay's honor will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Alban's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1125, Auburndale, FL. 33823, the Alzheimer's Association act.alz.org/donate or your local food pantry.
