Ely Robert Cohen
Ely Cohen, 88 U.S. Army veteran, educator and leader Ely Robert Cohen of Willowbrook, Staten Island, New York, a U.S. Army veteran and retired New York City Department of Education teacher and administrator, died May 24, 2020, at Staten Island University Hospital. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he and his wife settled in Willowbrook in 1967. After graduating from The City College of New York-CUNY, Mr. Cohen entered the U.S Army and was stationed in Korea. He went on to receive his PhD. Mr. Cohen began a teaching career at James Fenimore Cooper J.H.S. in Manhattan, teaching English and History. After working on Wall Street, he taught at Lafayette H.S. in Brooklyn. He then served as an administrator for the New York City Department of Education GED Program, Auxiliary Services for 14 years until he retired in 1987. He also ran his own tax preparation business for several decades. Mr. Cohen's passion and dedication made an impact that will be felt for years to come. He was a member of the New York State United Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers, and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). He came out of retirement to run the UFT Retired Teachers Center on Staten Island. Mr. Cohen was honored as an educator and received numerous awards, including The Edith Potter/Anne Reel Award from the UFT Retired Teachers Chapter in recognition of his commitment to lifetime learning. He held leadership roles in B'nai B'rith and on the Education Committee of the Center for Life Long Development of the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island. He loved museums, theater, supporting charities, long walks, and discussing social and political issues. Mr. Cohen is survived by his wife of 63 years, Miriam (Kirschner), and often said, "Marrying Miriam was the best thing I ever did." He also leaves behind his daughter, Suzanne Wycoff (Richard), son, David Cohen (Marion), and five grandchildren. A private graveside service was held on Tuesday, May 26. A memorial service will take place at a future date. Donations can be made to any heartfelt cause in Mr. Cohen's memory.
