Mary Shanahan
Mary Shanahan, 90 NYS Conservative Party founder and travel enthusiast Mary Shanahan of Great Kills, Staten Island, N.Y., passed away Oct. 9, 2019, at the age of 90. Born in the Bronx, Mary (née Panzarino) met her husband of 34 years, Neil J. Shanahan, while both were employed by Sterling National Bank, N.Y. Neil preceded Mary in death in 1985. First dwelling in Brooklyn, the couple later moved to The Bronx, where they were very active in the formation of the NYS Conservative Party in 1962. Moving with their four children to her present home in Great Kills in 1965, Mary and her husband continued their political work with the Conservative Party. Mary held the position of personnel manager of Kmart from 1971 to 1981. Mary later worked at SI University Hospital, as the nursing coordinator from 1987 to 1997. Mary enjoyed many sports and was a member of The Silvettes Golf Club. Mary loved to travel and lived life to the fullest. Her favorite adventure was her trip across Europe from Portugal to the Greek Islands by motorcycle. Mary spent time living in Portugal, where she enjoyed boating and swimming in Algave. Mary is survived by her four children, Neil, MaryLou, Moira and Tara, and her granddaughter, Neely Fischer (née Shanahan) and husband Matthew Fischer. Funeral services are Saturday, Oct. 12, at 8:30 a.m. at Hanley Funeral Home. Mass is at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's, Richmond Town. Entombment is in Resurrection Cemetery.
