In memory of
Phyllis Aprile
Phyllis Aprile, 90 Devout Catholic, 'home was where her heart was' Phyllis Aprile, 90, passed away on Oct. 8, 2019. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Robert; daughters, Susan Merlini (Joe), Maria Aprile (Tom Jakubowski), and Barbara Aprile; her grandson, Vincenzo Vall-Llobera; step-grandchildren, Ryan, Robbie (Mary) and Marisa Merlini (Travis LaRock); a step-great-grandchild, Callan, and her only living brother, Frank Parisi. Phyllis was the youngest of 13 children. She was surrounded by siblings, nieces, and nephews her entire life - including her oldest nephew, Peter Parisi, whom she was just 10 years older than - so family was the bedrock of her foundation. This was made evident by her devotion to being a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother. Her home had an open door policy, the more the merrier. From family to friends to even the postman, Phyllis invited all to her kitchen table. That included lavish banquet dinner parties to cozy suppers always homemade and from her heart. She even served her husband dinner the day she passed. Her homemade cuisine was only surpassed by her award-winning baking delights, an instant hit wherever she brought them and adored by the world around, especially her grandson. Phyllis enjoyed traveling, showcased by many trips to Atlantic City, across the country, luxurious cruises, and vacations to Italy; however, home was where her heart was. Through all of that, she managed to find time to crochet, including many a baby blanket. In her youth, at the encouragement of her sister - a seamstress in the fashion district - she graced 7th Avenue as an "in house" fashion model for Vogue: House of Fashion. As a devout Catholic and a member of the Children of Mary, her poise and grace were second only to her virtue. Phyllis and her husband, Bob, were often referred to as "Ozzie and Harriet." Their remarkable 66-year marriage should be a blueprint for any couple's long-term commitment. Visiting is at Scarpaci Funeral Home on Amboy Road on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass will be said at St. Thomas Church at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
