Myrna Levin Higgins
Myrna Levin Higgins Teacher known for her strong spirit, quick wit, and fashion sense Myrna Levin Higgins, originally from West Orange, N.J., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday Oct. 5, 2019. All who loved her, whether they called her Mom, Grammy, Myrn, Myrna, daughter, sister, cousin, partner or friend, enjoyed her presence, her strong spirit, and her quick wit. She was a force. Myrna cherished her family and friends and her many pets, all of whom returned that love unconditionally. Throughout her life, Myrna threw herself into her passions. Her faith being central, she joined a weekly Temple study group and became a Bat Mitzvah at age 75. Myrna spent her career dedicated to teaching children to read. Making a difference in a child's life brought her immense joy. Myrna began her teaching career in Boston and then in both Newport and Rhode Island public schools. She was formerly the president of the International Reading Association. Myrna loved a good book, gardening and cooking projects, and afternoons playing mahjong. She was known for her flair and her impeccable sense of fashion. As a child, she loved her adventures as a physician's daughter, such as living on the Rocky Boy's Reservation in Montana. Most of all, Myrna loved to be in the company of her family, close friends and her beloved dogs, whether at the beach in Newport, R.I., or in her beautiful gardens in New Jersey. Myrna was the daughter of the late Dr. Murray Levin and Julia Levin. Myrna leaves behind her children, Lynn and partner Marty, Carol and partner Joanne, and Tommy and wife Lisa. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Michele, Jeffrey, Debbie and husband Mike, Daniel, Adam, Jonathan, and Benjamin. She is also survived by a large, loving, extended family and countless friends from around the country. Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Rd., Livingston, N.J. Burial will be at the Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Woodbridge, N.J. Shiva will be held immediately following the burial at the home of David and Leslie Dannin Rosenthal. In lieu of flowers, please give charitably to hospice care: Good Shepherd Community Care, 90 Wells Ave,. Newton, Mass. 02459.
