Joseph Amato
Joseph Amato, 88 Beloved uncle, business owner, proud Korean War veteran Joseph Amato, business owner, sports car racer, Korean War veteran and beloved uncle, passed away on Sept. 24, 2019, in Mesa, Ariz., at the age of 88. Mr. Amato was the youngest son of the late Matteo and Mildred Amato. Mr. Amato was born in Staten Island, N.Y., and raised in Grasmere. His service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves began in 1947, and he entered into active service on Oct. 10, 1951. He participated in the Korean Campaign with United Nations Forces in action against enemy Communist forces. Mr. Amato received an honorable discharge holding the rank of staff sergeant on Oct. 9, 1954. Mr. Amato's lifelong career began with his position at Alfa Romeo in Linden, N.J. He then established Tan Line Inc., a lost and found courier reclaim business in partnership with the airlines in Newark, N.J. After relocating to Arizona, he most recently held a position at Honeywell in Phoenix, Ariz. He so enjoyed his work days with his colleagues; he continued to work up to the age of 85. He was a very patriotic American and was very proud to have served his country. His interests were sports cars, airplanes and spending time with his dear friends at the shooting range in the desert. Mr. Amato was predeceased by his brothers, Alphonse Sr. and Louis, and is survived by his nephew, Alphonse Amato; nieces, Judith Amato Dolce and MaryEllen Branigan; great-nieces, Tiffany Montaruli and Heather Carlson; great-great-nieces, Ava and Victoria, and cousins, Janet and Margery Shane. A private burial service is planned.
