James Clendenin Altemus Jr. BLOOMFIELD - James Clendenin Altemus Jr., age 76, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol (Bittner) Altemus; three children, David (Marcie) Altemus, Michael Altemus and Elizabeth Altemus (Nathan Hayes); four grandchildren, Emilia, Madeline, Jackson and Carson; and many cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Paul Altemus in 2014. Jim was born in Burlington, Vt., and was the son of James and Dorothy (Bains) Altemus. He earned his bachelor and master of business administration degrees from Cornell University, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon. Jim worked for Dow AgroSciences for 35 years in field sales. After his retirement, he was a cabinetmaker and gunsmith at Genesee Country Village & Museum for 20 years. Jim was a member of the Bloomfield Scientific Club. He was a canoe enthusiast, phenomenal woodworker, history buff and 1812 reenactor. Jim had been helping to restore the boat Pat II at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum for the last few years. Friends may call on Sunday, September 29, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home Inc., 2 South Ave., Bloomfield. His memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 15, at 2 p.m. at Genesee Country Village & Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford. Interment will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Genesee Country Village & Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford, NY 14511; or Finger Lakes Boating Museum, 8231 Pleasant Valley Road, Hammondsport, NY 14840.
