John Alfred Zawitosky, 79 U.S. Army veteran, retired FDNY Captain John A. Zawitosky, born in Richmond Valley, Staten Island, passed away peacefully on Sept. 22, 2019, while residing in Chocowinity, N.C. John was a longtime resident of Pleasant Plains, S.I., until moving to Chocowinity in 2002. John proudly served in the U.S. Army, and was a veteran of the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Army, he became a NYC firefighter and had a distinguished 28 year career, retiring as the Captain of Ladder Co. 161 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, N.Y. John was an avid boater, as a member of both Richmond County and Great Kills Yacht Clubs. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, and riding one of his 2 Harley Davidsons. John is survived by his wife, Betty, married over 50 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Sandy, his son, John, and 4 grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. at Washington Funeral & Cremation Hillside Chapel, 4500 US Hwy 264 East, Washington, N.C., 27889. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the NYC Firefighters Burn Center or the Chocowinity Fire Dept., 512 NC Highway 33E, Chocowinity, N.C. 27817.
