Theodore "Sandy" Burns
Theodore 'Sandy' Burns Newark English teacher, retired from East Side High School Theodore "Sandy" Burns, 76, of Fort Lee, N.J., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019. Beloved son of the late Theodore "Dody" and Josephine Burns; loving brother of Joseph and his wife, Joyce Burns; dear uncle of Lauren and her husband, Michael Mattaliano, and Alexis and her husband, Christopher Milano, and adored grand-uncle of Ella, Francesca, Olivia, and Michael Luca. Sandy was raised in Belleville, N.J., where he was a 1961 graduate of Belleville High School before going on to Fairleigh Dickinson University to receive his bachelor's degree. Mr. Burns was an English teacher for the Newark Public School System for 32 years before retiring in 1998 from East Side High School. He enjoyed reading, movies, and shows, but his real passion was playing bridge with friends as a master bridge player. The funeral is on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 7 Two Bridges Rd., Fairfield, N.J. The Funeral Mass is on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church. Entombment is in Glendale Mausoleum. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis Tenn. 38105.
