In memory of
Lewis Joseph "Lou" Race
On September 5, 2019 Heaven called down for a fourth bridge player. Lou Race heeded that call and passed, releasing the insidious grip of cancer which had rendered him small, but not afraid. Indeed, his rich and eventful 92 years had provided him with more than age and disease could ever diminish. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two sons-in-law. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Lois Elaine Miller Race and their three children Cathy Race Hubeli (daughter-Micah), Randy Race, and Becky Race Estey (son, Sean and daughter, Chanay). Lou's story is a quintessential American story: young and industrius Iowan farmboy grows up, marries local sweetheart, finds career, creates family, then moves with family across the country to further career and put down roots. With his own hands he builds(literally) his home and nest, and finally he retires into the spoils of his labor. Many notable chapters of his life involve his service in the Korean War, his professional role in bringing direct dial to the Fort Walton Beach area, his testing and involvement with the "first" cellphone and his breadth of communication skills showcased in the initial installment of Motorola microwave towers throughout the Southeast. He retired from Motorola in 1994, which allowed him to continue his life-long interest in "tinkering" with Ford Mustangs and Chevy Corvettes. His family and friends will truly miss his enless supply of jokes, his antics in both bridge and poker, his tall tales (especially in the fishing arena, as well as his love for refurbishing fast cars. Our community has lost a truly intelligent, fun-loving man while Heaven has gained a man whose skills will surly be put to use. The family thanks Emerald Coast Hospice nurses Debbie, Carol, Beth, Olivia as well as social worker, Jennifer. You kept Lou in pain free, good spirits throughout his battle. Special thanks to Bill Rogers, Lois' nephew from Omaha, NE, who was of great support to the family at this stressful time. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE will be held beginning at 3:00pm on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Rick's Crab Trap on Eglin Parkway. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to your favorite charity.
