Dr. Chol J. Lee
Dr. Chol J. Lee, 84 Served as director of inpatient psychiatric unit at St. Vincent's Dr. Chol Lee passed away on Sept. 7, 2019, at the age of 84. He was a devoted husband, fa ther and physician who took pride in helping patients during a career spanning five decades. Dr. Lee was born in Seoul, Korea, in 1935, and earned his medical degree from Yonsei University. He completed his training at Medfield State Hospital and New York University, and joined St. Vincent's Hospital in Staten Island, where he served as the director of the inpatient psychiatric unit. He also enjoyed helping many private patients throughout his long career. Dr. Lee was a dedicated teacher and community leader. He trained many medical students and residents as a clinical instructor at NYU and a clinical assistant professor at New York Medical College. He was committed to many local, regional and national organizations, including the Staten Island Mental Health Committee, the Minority Advisory Council for the Office of Mental Health for the State of New York and the Asian American Mental Health Task Force of the National Institute of Mental Health. He was recognized by colleagues and served as president of the Korean-American Medical Association (KAMA) of Greater New York and president of the National KAMA. He was a member of the board of trustees for the Hamilton Madison House and awarded America's Top Psychiatrist by the American Psychiatric Association in 2006. Dr. Lee is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Young S. Lee; his children, Helen and David Warren, Dr. Mimi Lee and Doris and Andreas Sohmen-Pao; and three grandsons, Max, Alex, and Leon. A wake and service will take place Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Matthew Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at The Church of the Madonna, 340 Main St., Fort Lee, N.J. 07024.
