Anita Lucille Carter Ellis
Anita was born on March 11, 1921 in Wilmington, CA and passed away on August 15, 2019 in Irvine, CA. She was 98 years old. Raised in Inglewood, CA, Anita graduated from Inglewood High School and later attended UCLA to become an elementary school teacher. She belonged to Sigma Kappa Sorority. Upon graduation, she taught her first year in Long Beach, CA. With the advent of WW ll, Anita joined the Red Cross as a Recreation Director to help support the war effort. After the war, she moved to Indio, CA where she worked as a dispatcher for Massey Rock and Sand Company. It was during this period that she met and later married Wade G. Ellis. They raised four children - Kimberley, Wade Timothy, Mark and Karen. Always civic minded, Anita helped to start the Riverside County National Date Festival and was the first leading lady in the first Arabian Nights Pageant. She later wrote the script for the third pageant. Anita was a gifted writer. Her days as a busy mother revolved around her family's activities. Anita was instrumental in establishing the Herbert Hoover Elementary School Halloween Carnival where she was an iconic figure each year as the very scary fortune teller. She was an active member of PEO, Garden Club of the Desert, and Panhellenic. In early years she was active in the Indio Women's Club. Anita also loved to travel and took many trips to England. A favorite trip was to the Galapagos Islands! In her later years, Anita returned to teaching as a substitute teacher. She spent several years teaching at local schools in the Coachella Valley. In 1999 she moved from Indian Wells, CA to Regents' Point in Irvine, CA where she remained for the rest of her life. There she was able to attend many events and athletic competitions of her grandchildren. A kind and fun loving person, Anita made friends easily. A committed and unselfish mother to her four children and a fun grandma to her eight grandchildren. Her beautiful smile and her gracious, generous spirit will live forever with us. Anita was laid to rest at Coachella Valley Cemetery in Coachella. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held in October in the Palm Desert area. Location to be determined.
