Horst Roeck
Horst Roeck, 84 Master baker who owned Horst's Meiers Corners Bakery Horst Roeck, 84, died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness on Monday, June 3, 2019. Born Oct. 12, 1934, in Pforzheim, Germany, he had lived in Dongan Hills, S.I., since 1960. He briefly lived in Westerleigh. Prior to moving to the U.S. 1954, he lived Stuttgart, Bad Cannstadt, Germany. Horst was married to Wiltrude (Trudy) for 61 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: George Roeck (Margaret), Westfield, N.J.; Linda Roeck, Minden, Nev.; Susan Carilli (Ricky) Great Kills; Michael Roeck, Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and Holly Savoia (Kenneth) Dongan Hills. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Victoria Roeck, Brooklyn, N.Y., Adam Ferone (Nicole), Middleton Idaho; Alexander Ferone (TaylorAnn) Gardnerville, Nev.; Caitlin Ferone, Minden, Nev.; Ricky Carilli Jr., Pittsburg, Calif.; Matthew Carilli, Jackson, N.J.; Nicholas Roeck and Christopher Roeck, Wall Township, N.J.; Louis Savoia, Jillian Savoia, Dongan Hills, and a great-grandchild, Hudson Ferone, Middleton, Idaho. He was expecting his first great-granddaughter in August. He is also survived by his only nephew, Tomas Roeck, in Germany. Horst enjoyed his five cats, wild birds, squirrels and his tropical fish tank. Horst fed the blue jays and squirrels peanuts daily in all weather. His hobbies included wood carving with the Staten Island Carvers at Emmanuel Lutheran on Clove Road. He was an avid deep sea fisherman and owned several boats including his pride, The Horst II, a Nordic Tug. Horst was the East Coast distributor for the Nordic Tug company. He served his country in the Army National Guard as a reservist. Horst came to America to work in his godmother's bakery as a baker after attending apprentice school in Germany. He briefly worked at Marine Park Bakery in Great Kills prior to purchasing his own bakery, Horst's Meiers Corners Bakery in November 1961. He was president and secretary for several terms for the Master Bakers Association of Staten Island. Horst sold his bakery in 1986, to focus on his grandchildren and to enjoy the hobbies he loved so much. He was introduced to the computer by his children and enjoyed researching his birth town and county; he soon became a Facebook regular. Horst was known for his famous German stollen and his fresh apple pie. No canned filling was used, only farm fresh apples he and his family peeled and cut on a weekly basis. Funeral: Hanley in New Dorp The wake is Thursday, June 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp. The Funeral Mass is Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at St Ann's RC Church, Dongan Hills. Donations to the Kidney Foundation in lieu of flowers are appreciated by the family.
