Amy Musashi
Amy Musashi Coachella - Amy Musashi was born in Indio, California on May 20, 1931 to Japanese immigrants, Seitaro and Nui Nagata, who arrived in the Coachella Valley in the early 1900s. Her parents settled in Indio where they lived and operated the Nagata Farm. She was the third of four children: Grace, Lily, Amy and George. Amy attended Roosevelt Elementary School and spent much of her time at the Friends of Jesus Christ Church in Coachella, a chapel that served as the centerpiece in the social and spiritual life of the local Japanese community. In 1942, at the age of ten, Amy and her family had to leave their Indio home and farm and were relocated to Poston Interment Camp in Arizona where they remained for the duration of WWII. In the summer of 1945, the Nagata family returned to Indio where they once again resumed life on the Nagata Farm. Amy went on to graduate from Coachella Valley High School in 1949. In 1950 she moved to Los Angeles and worked at the office of Manning, Maxwell and Moore, a railroad supply company in Los Angeles. Amy later returned to the Coachella Valley to work on the Nagata Farm. In 1958, she married Ben Musashi, whose family also owned a family vegetable farm in Thermal. They raised two children, Howard and Susan. Ben and his three brothers built their homes and raised their families alongside each other on the farm. Her next 50 years were spent working with Ben's brothers and their families on the Musashi Brothers Farm. While working long hours on the farm, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Words cannot describe her dedication to her family. She formed many deep friendships and fond memories over her lifetime in the Coachella Valley. Amy passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019. She will be deeply missed by her children Howard (Alice) and Susan (George), grandchildren Curtis (Emily) and Lindsay and her great-grandson, Jeremiah. She is survived by her sisters, Grace and Lily and brother, George. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn located at 51990 Jackson Street, Coachella, CA.
