Mary A. Sweeney Trailblazer, family matriarch, retired assistant superintendent Mary A. Sweeney, 98, of Red Bank, N.J., formerly of Elmwood Park and Stockholm, N.J., passed away on Jan. 22, 2019. She was the widow of Bernard (Ben) T. Sweeney, the love of her life, and the beloved matriarch of a family of six children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was born in Manhattan to Patrick J. and Catherine T. Kenneally. Mary was a kind and gentle woman with a wonderful sense of humor, whose strength and positive outlook inspired all who knew her. She was also a trailblazer. Balancing family, work, and part-time studies, Mary earned bachelor's and master's degrees at William Paterson University. She retired as assistant superintendent for business in the Wanaque, N.J., school district and was previously bursar of Paterson Catholic High School. Mary is survived by her children, Catherine of Monmouth Beach and New York City, Bernard T. (Donna) of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Jane (Andre) of Lambertville, N.J., Neal (Mary) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Martin (Lisa) of New York City; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, James Sweeney of Avon, N.J., and legions of cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Mary P. Johnson, and by her siblings, Catherine T. (the late Patrick) Callahan, Joseph (Jean) Kenneally and Margaret P. Kenneally. A private Mass was held and the family plans a celebration of Mary's life this summer. Donations to the Mary A. Sweeney Scholarship Fund to assist mature, part-time students may be made payable to William Paterson University noting Mary A. Sweeney Scholarship on the check and mailed to: Office of Alumni Relations, 42 Harmon Place, North Haledon, NJ 07508. The John E. Day Funeral Home in Red Bank, N.J., made the arrangements.
