Yolanda Rosenschein
Yolanda Rosenschein, 97, passed away on Sunday evening, February 3, 2019, at Harrisburg Hospital. She was born Yenti Gitl Bleier on April 9, 1921, in the town of Mukachevo (Munkacs) in eastern Czechoslovakia. She was the second youngest of nine children. During World War II, the Nazis deported the Jewish population of the town to Auschwitz, where her parents and the majority of her family were murdered upon arrival. In the concentration camp, she met Freda Lederer (ne Rosenschein), who was to become her best friend for 69 years and also her sister-in-law. They were transferred to Weisswasser and later Bergen-Belsen, where they were liberated by the British Army on April 15, 1945. Yolanda married Martin Rosenschein in 1946. They lived in a refugee camp in Germany for three years and immigrated to the United States, settling in Harrisburg, under the sponsorship of the local Jewish community, in March 1949, where their three sons were born. Yolanda and Martin built a dry-cleaning business, Rose Family / Quality Cleaners, along with Martin's family. Yolanda was active in the Jewish community of Harrisburg. She served as President of the PTA of the Silver Academy in 1963 and President of the Kesher Israel Sisterhood in 1968. As a Holocaust survivor, she would speak in local schools and official commemoration events. Yolanda spoke seven languages, loved reading, and regularly outscored her children and grandchildren at Scrabble. She was much loved by her family and many friends for her generosity, warmth, optimism, and big heart. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Martin Rosenschein (1919-1991), and siblings Bina Scharf (1914-1992), Herman Bleier (1925-2002), and another six siblings who died in the Holocaust. Yolanda is survived by her three sons, Stanley of Palo Alto, California, and Robert (and wife Diane) and Jeffrey (and wife Beth) of Jerusalem, Israel; eleven grandchildren, Ari, Koby, Avi, Dov, Akiva, Chana, Moshe, Meir, Yair, Margalit, and Elianna; and seven great-grandchildren, Max, Tzvi, Abe, Adi, Michael, Sammy, and Gavriel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 5, at 1:00pm in the Kesher Israel Cemetery Chapel, at 566 Oliver Drive, Harrisburg, PA, 17109, with burial following. Shiva will be observed at The Residence of the Jewish Home, 4004 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA, 17112, on Tuesday evening and all-day Wednesday.
