Lawrence H. Madden Jr.
Lawrence H. Madden, Jr., 75, of Wilbraham, died on his late mother’s 100th birthday at home surrounded by his family after a long illness on January 31, 2019. Born June 13, 1943, to the late Lawrence and Dorothy R. (Baldwin) Madden Sr., he was raised in Ludlow, MA. Growing up in Ludlow, Larry attended and graduated from Ludlow High school where he was a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame 1961 Championship Western Mass Boys Basketball team. Larry was a proud member of the Army National Guard. Larry was an avid sports fan and enjoyed his New England sports teams including the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins. His love and passion for sports was evident in all aspects of his life beginning in 1968 when he helped establish the Suburban Basketball League and the Scantic Valley Baseball League. Larry was the first recreation director in Wilbraham in 1972 and oversaw the development of hundreds of youth programs in town. He was also one of the original planners for the Spec Pond Recreational facility. Larry was the Minnechaug Girls’ Basketball coach and youth coach as well as a basketball official and baseball umpire for over 35 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for Ludlow Boys and Girls Club for many years. Larry loved his church. As an original member of St. Cecilia’s parish in Wilbraham since age 13, he gave countless hours of service. He was the first manager and parish council president of St. Cecilia’s Church. He was an usher, coordinated numerous church anniversary celebrations, auctions, Men’s Club activities and CYO basketball. Larry enjoyed Christmastime when he volunteered as Santa Claus at the Eastfield Mall for many years. He was also the owner of the Lawrence H Madden Insurance Agency for 30 years. When Larry was not working, he loved playing cards, working on jigsaw puzzles, going on road trips and creating excel spreadsheets. Larry leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia H. (Dvorchak) Madden, his daughters; Karen Madden and Kathleen (Madden ) DeMorris and her husband Stephen, all of Wilbraham, MA; his sister, Jacqueline Madden of Ludlow, MA; and many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Larry is predeceased by his sister, Rita Capitan and his brother, Michael Madden. Larry’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Beacon Hospice, especially Samantha and Brittany, and also to Trinity ICU for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe be made to the Jimmy Fund, 44 Binney St. Boston, MA 02115, Beacon Hospice, 815 Worcester Street, Springfield, MA 01151, or Crudem Foundation c/o Dr. Peter Kelly, 362 Sewall Street, Ludlow, MA 01056. Visiting Hours for Larry will be held Friday, February 8, 2019, 4pm-7pm, at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd, Springfield, MA 01129. Funeral Services for Larry will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019, beginning at 8:30 am at Sampson’s, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main Street, Wilbraham, MA 01095. Interment to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Rd, Springfield, MA 01129.
