Robert Everett Mayo III
PORTLAND - Robert Everett Mayo III Robert E. Mayo III, born June 28, 1923, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2018. He grew up the oldest of three children in Hamden, Conn.After completing high school he attended the University of Connecticut and like many of his generation in WWII was anxious to serve and enlisted in the Navy in 1943. Bob became a Corpsman, Pharmacist Mate 3rd class assigned to the 333rd Marine Scout Bombing Squadron on Midway Island.After being honorably discharged in 1946 he returned home where he went to work for a bank and met his future wife Beverly Sargent of Fryeburg, Maine. They married in 1948 and lived in Cheshire, Conn., having many happy years there together. The family moved to Maine in 1962 where he worked in sales and lived in South Freeport for many years before settling in Bangor.Bob and Beverly had four children together. After the passing of Beverly in 1971 he continued to raise his children alone until he married his second wife Betty with whom traveled often. Bob was an avid tennis player and golfer, enjoying many good times with friends.After retirement Bob moved to Portland where he continued to stay active. He loved to walk the boulevard and volunteered at the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital that he found very rewarding. Bob was always happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren at family gatherings. He will always be remembered for his charming personality right up to his last days.Bob was predeceased by his daughter Robin and sister Hope. He is survived by his sister Peggy; and his three children, Lynn Wiest and partner Paul Thebeau of Freeport, William and wife Barbara of Manchester, Robert Mayo of Newport, two stepchildren, Debra Ricker and David Smith; grandchildren Tiffany Hall, Zachary and Jason Wiest, Kasie Thelen, Carey Lockhart, John Luttrell, Courtney, William and Susannah Mayo, and step granddaughter Jennifer Lynch; 11 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The family would like to thank the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta where Bob was lovingly cared for over the past six years.There will be no funeral, but a private family graveside ceremony in the Spring.In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Maine Veterans home in Augusta, Maine
