In memory of
John Heil
Longtime Manhattan Beach resident John Heil died peacefully on Nov. 9th, surrounded by his loving family. He had a long and fulfilling life, growing up the oldest of 5 children in a working class East Boston tenement, going on to have a successful career, family, and retirement in Southern California. As a youngster, he did very well in school, was a camp counselor, served as a Navy radio operator on WWII submarines, and graduated from Northeastern University with honors. When he was offered a job at Hughes Aircraft, he jumped at the chance to move to SoCal with his wife Elaine and baby daughter Karen. Their children Lisa and Jon were subsequently born in California. He worked for Hughes continuously as an aerospace electrical engineer for 30 plus yrs. until his retirement. He always referred to California as "God's Country". John and Elaine first lived in Santa Monica, then the family lived in three different houses in Manhattan Beach. They were active members of American Martyrs Parish, and also participated in long running Bridge groups as well as having other pursuits. They had many dear lifelong friends. John was known for his kindness, generosity and gentleness of spirit; Elaine was known for her fun personality and sharp sense of humor. As a family, they went on many memorable camping and car trips together. As a couple they traveled to Europe, China and Morocco, and took many ocean cruises all over the world. After Elaine's death in 2016, John moved to the Bay area to be near his daughters. He is survived by his kids Karen, Lisa, Jon, and the 2018 World Series champions, the Boston Red Sox. He will be very much missed.
