LAURA CONTUZZI
Laura DePaolis Contuzzi EASTHAMPTON, MA Laura DePaolis Contuzzi, formerly of Easton, passed away peacefully on Oct. 28, 2018, at her home in Easthampton, MA, surrounded by her loving family. Born in a hayloft 96 years ago in a small village high up in the mountains of central Italy, she came to America as a baby and grew up in Easton. She met Pete Contuzzi, her husband, at the factory known as the "Coil Works," where he served as president of the union. They married during World War II and quickly produced a son and daughter less than a year apart. Laura thrived as a full-time mother and was a very social person. She easily made friends and enjoyed striking up conversations with almost anyone who passed her way. The bond with her sisters was a source of sustenance for her and all of them throughout their lives. Two of them predeceased her, Edith Transue and Gina Germano, while two survive her, Eve Johnson of Piscataway, NJ, and Mary Azzalina of Easton. Laura was a can-do person, volunteering at soup kitchens and hospice shops throughout her life. She was a Girl Scout leader, a PTA member, and always participated in the charitable works of the Catholic church groups to which she belonged. Laura was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed going to baseball and football games. Traveling was another favorite pastime, whether it was trips abroad with her husband and close friends or being in Florida every winter during retirement in a community filled with snowbird relatives, many from the Easton area. By far, though, the major part of her energy went to her family. She was a loyal supporter at the athletic events, plays, and concerts for her children and grandchildren. After her husband died, she moved in 1997, to Northampton to be with her son, Peter and his family, and nearer to her daughter, Lorraine Schilling and her family in eastern Massachusetts. Laura remained vigorous well into her 90s. As she gradually slipped away over the past year or so, she faced the end of her long life in a positive frame of mind, often commenting on the beauty of nature. Calling hours will be at Morello Funeral Home, 3720 Nicholas St., Easton, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. There will be a Funeral Mass at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, 600 Washington St. in Easton at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, followed by burial at the Church cemetery on Cedarville Rd. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Laura can be made to the Lathrop Community, Easthampton, MA, or Cooley Dickinson Hospice, Northampton, MA.
