Rev. Dr. Donald Earl Modisher
Rev. Dr. Donald Earl Modisher Nashville - Rev. Dr. Donald Earl Modisher died on October 17, 2018 surrounded by his family at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN. He was 98. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Carolyn Modisher of Nashville, TN; a daughter, Christine (Marsha) Modisher of Nashville, TN; a son, Jim (Susi) Modisher of Blackhawk, CO; a granddaughter, Heidi (Garrick) Steele of Golden, CO; a grandson, Dustin Modisher of Boulder, CO; and a great grandson, Gavin Steele of Golden, CO. Don was born on January 28, 1920 in Sharpsville, PA to parents James and Anna Modisher. Upon graduating from high school in Meadville, PA he attended Allegheny College in Meadville, where he received his undergraduate degree and met his wife Carolyn. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School in 1945. He would later receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Allegheny College honoring his many outstanding years in the ministry. Don served his first church at the age of 19 while still attending Allegheny College. Following his graduation from Yale, Rev. Modisher served as a chaplain in the US Army from 1945-46 with duty on troop transport ships in the Pacific where he earned the nickname "Chappy". After the military he served as pastor for Methodist churches in Conneaut Lake, PA and Girard, PA. He then served as pastor of the United Methodist (UM) Church in Fredonia, NY from 1959-1968 after which he was appointed District Superintendent of the Jamestown NY district, a position he served for six years. He then became the Conference Executive for the Western NY Conference of the UMC in Buffalo NY for the next five years, where he had supervision of 310 churches in the conference. In 1979 he returned to the pastorate at UMC Kidder Church in Jamestown NY before retiring in 1984. During his retirement years he enjoyed RVing with his wife Carolyn, traveling the US while visiting family and their many, many friends. He was also able to serve as a Chaplain again at the Voyager RV Resort in Tucson, AZ for ten years, where he started the Chapel program. Don and Carolyn spent their summers on Chautauqua Lake where they owned a summer home on the lake for 35 years. Don enjoyed his lake time, boating, golf, and old cars. A Celebration of Life will be held for Don on November 10, 2018 at 2pm in the chapel at the Belmont United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Belmont United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
