In memory of
Michelle (Mickey) McDONALD M.D.
McDONALD, Michelle, MD (Mickey) 61, passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones on May 11, 2016, after a prolonged illness due to carcinoid tumors and their complications. She leaves behind her beloved husband Bob Johnson, three wonderful children whom she cherished: Helen Cordier (Kye), Erik McDonald Johnson and Amelia McDonald Johnson, a blessing of a grandchild, Brynn Rose Cordier, a close sister, Megan McDonald, and several friends that she loved like family. Mickey grew up moving frequently as the daughter of a career Air Force officer, Jim McDonald and his college sweetheart Dorothy McAllister (both deceased), within and outside of the US. She learned at a young age to love and truly value the opportunities to be among peoples of different cultures and backgrounds. She enjoyed the benefits of a strong education, and trained to be a Family Physician. This provided the means to engage with and be of service to a broad swathe of our community over her working years. Including serving the people of the Navajo nation through the Indian Health Services in Kayenta, AZ. In Tucson, Mickey worked with Thomas Davis Medical Centers, St. Elizabeth and El Pueblo Clinics as a primary care physician. She transferred her focus of attention largely from individual patients to the community at large when she moved to the Health Department, and loved the challenges and opportunities of participating in our community's health response to events such as attending to the medical needs of Katrina evacuees, implementing a response to a measles outbreak, pandemic flu and multiple day to day outbreaks of infections in complex settings such as nursing homes and other medical settings. She also treasured the opportunity to treat patients from all over the world with tuberculosis, who had increasingly challenging medical backgrounds. While Mickey considered herself lucky to have work she could do with passion and commitment, the most important aspect of her life has been family and close friends. Being a wife, sister, daughter, friend, mother and grandmother were her greatest joy and interest. Living for a longish time with illness provided some benefits, including time to be with loved ones, to work things through with a long ranging view, to express love and connection. This time also provided Mickey the chance to cultivate a spiritual practice, a connection to creativity and art, and to speak with a more authentic and loving voice. She wants to thank all who have traveled these roads with her, together being. An open gathering of friends and family to celebrate Mickey's life is planned for Friday, May 20, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. located at Tohono Chul Park. If you wish to make a commemorative gift in Mickey's honor, please consider making it a regular practice to let those you love know it, or making a donation to benefit Pachamama (the environment) or redress socioeconomic inequity. Arrangements by MARANA MORTUARY & CEMETERY.
