SPARTA – George Gus Hughes, 71, passed away at his home on Thursday, August 20, 2015. He was born on January 5, 1944, in Calhoun County to Leonard B. Hughes and Frances L. Holloway Hughes. He had worked as a feed mill operator and a farmer until his retirement. He was a member of New Hope Church of God. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2015, at Southern Funeral Chapel in Houston with Brother Linn Hughes and Brother Greg Moss officiating. Burial will follow in the Hughes Family Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, August 21, 2015, at Southern Funeral Chapel. He is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson Hughes of Sparta; his children, Linn Hughes (Darlene) of Sparta, Ellen Allen (Johnny) of Houston and John Hughes of Sparta; one brother, Billy Hughes (PeJay) of Sparta; grandchildren, Andy Hughes (Amanda) of Oklahoma City, Okla., Josh Sansing (Sarah) of Faulkner, Kimberly Johnson (Jamie) of Jacksonville, Fla., Malachi Hughes of Sparta, Johnny Allen and Frances Allen of Houston; great-grandchildren, Zoey Annabeth and Kalee Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Hughes; two sisters; and three brothers; a granddaughter, Gracie Hughes; and daughter-in-law, Glenda Hughes.
