Hugh Gilbert Lovell
Lovell, Hugh Gilbert 86 May 25, 1926 Nov. 09, 2012 Hugh Lovell passed away at home at the age of 86 of throat cancer. He was born in Nottingham, England, and eventually settled in Salem, where his father, R. Ivan Lovell, taught history at Willamette for many years. Hugh graduated from Salem High in 1943, winning a Storrs Scholarship to Pomona College. He hitchhiked home summers to pick berries, pack ice cream and work in the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver. A Phi Beta Kappa, he graduated from Pomona with an honors B.A. in Government and received his Ph.D. in Industrial Economics from MIT in 1951. He taught Economics and Labor Management Relations at Portland State University from 1954-90 and was Head of the Economics Department there from 1986-90. Hugh led dozens of Economic Education programs for grade school and university levels, both regionally and nationally. He accepted overseas teaching appointments in Tehran, Iran, and the Philippines and developed a public service economics television quiz show for KOIN-TV in 1975. From 1957 to 1990, while serving as an Industrial Relations Arbitrator, he wrote some 200 decisions for organizations in Oregon and Washington. He frequently published articles in the field and served as Senior Conciliator for the Oregon State Conciliation Service in 1974-75. Hugh's hobbies were woodworking and sailing, and he was a member of the Rose City Yacht Club. A meticulous craftsman, he built the family furniture and maintained his sailboats, Sea Urchin and Second Wind. He was an accomplished and adventurous sailor and regularly sailed Columbia River and Pacific Coast waters from Vancouver Island south to Zihuatenejo, Mexico. Hugh was most in his element when on the water and relished most the windiest and wettest of sailing days. Hugh is survived by his long-time friend and fiancee, Jean Morrison; his brother, Mike Lovell; children, Eric, Heather, and Evan Lovell; and ex-wife, Keigh Shutz. He was predeceased by his son, Mike. A celebration of his life will be held at Portland State University, Lincoln Hall Room 326, on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 at 4 p.m. Remembrances may be sent to the Oregon Food Bank.
