Constance V. Whalen
Constance V. Whalen 1928 - 2011 NORTHAMPTON - Constance V. Whalen, 83, of 337 Elm Street in Northampton passed away on Tuesday at Linda Manor ECF Facility. Connie was born in Chicopee on July 4, 1928 the daughter of Lawrence and Valerie (Wojcik) Linko. She was raised and educated in Chicopee and graduated from Chicopee High School in 1945 and from the Cooley Dickinson Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and upon graduation was selected to be a surgical nurse at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Connie was also a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. In order for Connie to be home with her three children, she went back to school to become certified as a teacher. In 1963, she owned and operated the Tiny Tot Nursery School from her Elm Street home until 1976. Connie re-entered her nursing career in 1976 as the Public Health Nurse with the City of Northampton and retired in 1995. She was a devoted communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Northampton and was a member of the Blessed Sodality organization. Her husband, James J. Whalen, retired Northampton Police Chief passed away in 1998. She leaves her children; Sara A. Whalen and her husband Stephen B. Broide of Florence, Lawrence P. Whalen of Northampton and David J. Whalen of Dalton, Ma. She also leaves her sisters; Lorraine Janis of Holyoke and Beverly Mokreczky of Amherst and Florida and several nieces and a nephew. The family would like to sincerely thank Angela Boyle, Nurse Practitioner and Dr. Warren Fisher for their collaboration and care, the nurses and staff of the Sunrise Unit of Linda Manor for their compassion and dedication to Connie. Also, Eucharistic Ministers Ed Boyer and Nancy Dostal for their weekly visits offering Connie to receive our Lord reverently and lovingly. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated across the street from Connie's home at Blessed Sacrament Church, 336 Elm Street in Northampton on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the Mass at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Donations in Connie's memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
