Pamela Sue Haines
Pamela Sue Haines August 8, 1948 - April 10, 2018 Hillsborough Pamela Sue Haines, 70, died Tuesday, April 10th, 2018, at her home in Hillsborough. She was born in Rochester, NY to John and Marion Haines, and graduated from Fairport High School. She went on to earn a B.S. in Nutrition from Cornell, a R.D. from Vanderbilt, a M.S. in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida, and finally a Doctorate in Public Health from the University of North Carolina. She worked for 25 years as a professor in the Department of Nutrition in the School of Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. A conscientious and charitable person, much of Pam's work centered around making the world around her a better place. In her early years, she volunteered in Colombia as part of the Peace Corps. Her scholarly work centered around improving dietary outcomes for under-served populations and communities. Pam especially treasured the teaching part of her professorship, and mentored countless graduate students over the years. Pam was a strong advocate of women in the workplace, and perfectly balanced having a demanding and illustrious career with taking care of her family. A loving and devoted wife and mother, Pam used her strong will and strong organizational skills to position her family for success. In her free time, Pam loved to tend to her gardens, to travel to new and exotic places, and to learn about the world around her. Pam was predeceased by her husband, William Nichols. She is survived by their son, Jacob Nichols (fiancée Lauren Senesac), and her sisters, Patricia Chapman and Sandra Borkhuis. Her combination of cleverness, kindness, strength, and grace in the face of adversity made her a role model in the eyes of all she met. A visitation will take place at Clements Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Saturday 4/14 from 12 to 1:30 PM, followed by burial at 3 PM at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston, VA. If you wish to make a gift in honor of Pam, the family suggests either spring flowers or a donation to a charity such as the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. in Hillsborough. Online condolences may be sent to www.clementsfuneralservice.com
