Gerald L. Holmes, age 81, of Alma, Missouri died on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at his home. Born Friday, May 11, 1934 in Bath, Maine, he was the son of the late Francis Holmes and the late Thelma Eskin Holmes. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars from October 2, 1951 until his retirement from the USAF on December 31, 1971 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He achieved the rank of TSGT during his 20 year service. He moved to Alma, MO in 1973 and worked as an electrician for Wilson Foods in Marshall, MO for 20 years, then retired in 1992. Mr. Holmes was a member of the Tieman-Blackburn American Legion Post #478. He married Betty Jean Bryson on December 18, 1959, who preceded him in death on December 29, 2004. Also preceded in death is one daughter, Carolyn Heyer; 4 brothers, Howard, Scott, Bernard and Richard Holmes, and 2 sisters, Lorraine Cumming and Dorothy Wahler. Surviving are son, Joey George of California, brothers, Stanley Holmes of California and William Holmes of Arizona and sister, Christie Snow of Vassalboro, ME; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Hoefer Chapel located at 1600 Main St. Higginsville with Rev. Terry Cook officiating. Interment in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers are Rodney Heyer, John Cross, Michael Cross, Eddie Renno, Mike Nupp, Gary Visentin; honorary pallbearers are Lyle McMains, Joseph Heyer and Ryan McMains.
