In memory of
Daniel Horton
On Wednesday, May 27th, 2020, Daniel Leland Horton, passed away at the age of 70. Dan was born on February 26th, 1950 to the late Harold and Rose (Gelmas)Horton. Harold and Rose raised Dan along with his 5 brothers and sisters (Jim, Chuck, Phyllis, Roseann and Joyce) in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland, OH. Following his graduation from John Marshall High School in 1968, Dan began his cabinet maker apprenticeship at Nagele Manufacturing. He remained at Nagele until his retirement, working in all facets of the architectural millworking industry. Dan had a deep appreciation for both the natural and built environment. He was a craftsman and loved to draw, design and build. These interests were most evident in his woodworking, which was not only his profession, but one of his most beloved pastimes. Whether working alone on rocking horses for his sons or collaborating with others on the restoration of Severance Hall, his passion for wood and woodworking was ever-present. Equally important was his deep appreciation for nature. His interest in trees and his fascination with Lake Erie kept him outdoors and near the water. His summers were spent on his boat, Amazing Grace, in Vermillion, where friends and family would often visit him. He also frequently visited the Bradstreet Fishing Pier in Rocky River and the Cleveland Metroparks throughout the seasons. Dan loved to spend time with his family. He enjoyed bike rides with his sons, a tradition which continued into their adult years. He also enjoyed working with his sons on their own personal projects, allowing him to pass down the knowledge he had gained over the years. He relished his newfound role as a grandfather, or "Papa H" as his grandchildren would call him. Dan loved playing with his grandkids, watching them grow and develop into young children. He was often up for the challenge of babysitting and loved to show off the pictures he took of his grandkids to family and friends. He was also always there to lend a helping hand to friends and family and welcomed a challenging project. He has touched so many lives and will be missed by so many people. He is survived by his loving children David Horton (Jean Barton) of Austin, TX and Michael (Joanne) Horton of Cleveland, OH; sisters Roseann (Charles) Cookson, Phyllis (Richard) Jicha, brother Chuck (Suzie) Horton, brother-in-law Jeff Rudy; and cherished grandchildren Lukas, Mae and William, all of whom will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by parents Harold and Rose Horton, brother Jim (Rosemary) Horton, and sister Joyce Rudy. Private Services. A Public Memorial Service for Dan will be held and for more information about Dan's life and future updates about his memorial service, visit: www.daniellelandhorton.com.
