Donald E. Jones
Donald E. Jones, 85, passed away peacefully in the arms of the Lord in his home Monday, July 29, 2019, following a brief illness. He was a lifetime resident of Elyria.
A 1953 graduate of Elyria High School, he excelled in multiple sports, including football. In 2015, Mr. Jones and his twin brother, Doug Jones, were inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame. He also attended Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas where he also excelled as a running back. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force from 1955-1959 and was stationed at Elgin Air Force Base in Florida. He was a retired cement mason with over 40 years of experience with various contractors.
Mr. Jones was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was a head baseball coach for Little League West for 10 years, taking teams to city finals several times.
He was a Charter Member of the Order of Pythagorans, Prince Hall Affiliated, Past Master of Sidonia Lodge #93 (PHA), Past High Priest of Golden Ark Chapter #38 (PHA), Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Phoenician Council #24, Honorary Past Grand Thrice Illustrious Master (PHA), Charter Member of Al Lalim Temple #223, Honorary Past Illustrious Potentate of Al Lalim Temple and Treasurer.
Mr. Jones leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Kimberly D. Jones Beal (Michael) and son, Glenn D. Jones, both of Elyria; several in-laws; many, many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Jones (2013); parents William E. Jones and Margaret Miller Jones; stepmother Mary Jones Parsons; twin brother, Douglas E. Jones; brothers, William C. Jones and James A. Jones, Sr.; sisters, Lucy M. Fitzpatrick, Ruth V. Smallwood, Thelma E. Martin, Sarah L. Brown, and Jean M. Halliburton.
Friends may call 4-8pm Monday, August 5 at the Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second Street, Elyria. Masonic Service by Sidonia Lodge #93 will be held Monday at 7pm. The funeral service will be 11am Tuesday, August 6 at the First United Methodist Church, 312 Third Street, Elyria. Reverend Monique Greenfield, former Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church in Elyria, will officiate. Burial will follow at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria with Military Honors presented by the Elyria VFW Post #1079.
