Reverend Richard H. Parks Jr.
Reverend Richard H. Parks, Jr., 76, died following a brief illness at Ames Hospice of the Western Reserve on Friday, July 27, 2018. He was born September 16, 1941. He spent most of his young life in McKeesport, PA. He attended The Fessenden School 5th-8th grade, Valley Forge Military Academy for high school and graduated from Penn State University, State College, PA.
Dick worked in Home Office Administration for several life insurance companies prior to entering the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He was a retired Elder of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served several churches: Paradise Hill UMC, Ashland, OH; First UMC, Lisbon, OH; Ontario UMC, Ontario, OH; and Lakewood UMC, Lakewood, OH. He also served as a District Superintendent for the Steubenville District, Steubenville, OH.
Upon retirement, he moved with his wife, Elizabeth, to Wesleyan Meadows, where he served as a Chaplain, played Bridge, ping-pong, bowled on their bowling team, participated in men's breakfast, and many other activities. In retirement, he and Liz attended Westlake UMC, then returned to Lakewood UMC upon the arrival of Reverend Dan Bryant, who was a good friend and he looked on him like a son.
Although Dick and Liz had no children of their own, he was a father figure to hundreds of young people. He gave many hours to Junior Achievement, Big Brothers, and Boy Scouts, and to mentoring and teaching children and youth in the church. He also wrote hundreds and hundreds of letters of encouragement to children and youth in the church, and also the youth of the Steubenville District. In addition, he worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Flat Rock Homes for challenged young people.
Dick will be greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (nee Adamson) Parks.
He was preceded in death by his parents Richard H. and Mary Joy Parks; brothers C. Carson Parks and Benjamin Riley Parks, and niece Hilary Taylor Parks Lane.
He is survived by brother Van Dyke Parks (Sally) and nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11am at the Lakewood United Methodist Church, 15700 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, OH. There will be calling hours on Friday, August 24, 2018 from 2-6pm at Lakewood United Methodist Church. Burial will be private.
