Jack Wayne Day
Jack Wayne Day, a 29-year resident of Landers, died Oct. 24, 2017, at the age of 79.
The son of Herman and Sally Day, he was born March 12, 1938, in Brownfield, Texas.
His military service included the U.S. National Guard and U.S. Navy, concluding with a duty assignment aboard the USS Tombigbee. He was honorably discharged on June 24, 1960.
Mr. Day was a test and trials manager at Todd Pacific Shipyard of San Pedro for more than 30 years before his eventual retirement.
He was a trustee at Loyal Order of Moose in Landers, past president at the Sportsman's Club of Joshua Tree and founder and past president of the Weekenders On Wheels camping club.
He loved fishing, camping, gambling in Laughlin, shooting pool and working with his tractor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Day, his mother, Sally Day, his sister Joyce Fagan and his nephew Jack Fagan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marla; his two sons, Dirk Day (Patti) and Mark Day (Valerie); his granddaughters, Christina Houser, Jennifer Mazzone and Jaclyn Day; his grandsons, Bill Ware and Kyle Day; and his six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters Roxie Barron (Doug), Linda Bray, Sue Wilson, Nedra Hudson (John) and Kathy Smith (Mike); his brothers, Hoyt Day, Andy Day (Jeannie) and Tony Day (Debra); and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at Wiefels Yucca Valley Funeral Chapel at 57285 Yucca Trail, Yucca Valley, CA 92284, (760) 365-2301.
A memorial service will be held immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
As the eldest of 10 children, Jack's family was his passion. He was the rock that held everyone together and easily made friends with everyone who crossed his path. Jack loved helping his neighbors and was active in his community of Landers. He will be greatly missed.
