Hurst, Norma 10/10/1927 - 9/11/2018 Ann Arbor Norma Elizabeth Hurst (nee Hakala) of Ann Arbor passed away peacefully on September 11, 2018 at age 90 releasing her from the erosive effects of dementia. Norma was born on October 10, 1927 in Puritan (Gogebic County), Michigan, daughter of William and Esther (Johnson) Hakala. Norma moved with her family to Ann Arbor during WWII and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1945. She entered the University of Michigan that fall on a four-year scholarship, but after one year of study she accepted the offer of an "MRS degree" from the handsome veteran who lived next door. Norma married Russell Hurst on April 19, 1947 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, then located at Fifth and William in downtown Ann Arbor. For the first decade of their marriage, Norma was a homemaker, but when their youngest child had started school, she went to work at Michigan Bell as a telephone operator. Soon after she moved over to the University of Michigan switchboard office and later became the Administrative Associate to the head of Transportation Services. She retired in 1984 after 25 years of dedicated service to the University. Norma and Russell were the original owners of their house on Arlene Street where they raised their three children, hosted six international exchange students, and where their five granddaughters spent their summer vacations enjoying the large backyard in-ground pool. Norma enjoyed bowling and attending U-M football and basketball with Russell as longtime season ticket holders. They also travelled throughout the U.S. and Europe together. At home they reveled in playing Euchre and hosting family gatherings and holiday celebrations. Norma had a gift for welcoming others and offering delightful meals, snacks and desserts, including her acclaimed homemade apple, blueberry and strawberry-rhubarb pies. Norma is survived by her three children Diana (Alan) Jones of Ellenton, FL, David of Flower Mound, TX, and Daryl (Kay) of Ann Arbor, granddaughters Ann (David) Edwards of Pflugerville, TX, Kim (Paul) Nizov of the United Arab Emirates, Lindsay (Chris) Holmes of Saint Augustine, FL, Angelina (Eric) Feldman of Silver Spring, MD, and Amy (Dan) Becker of McKinney, TX, great-grandsons Michael and Matthew Edwards, and Keegan Holmes, and great-granddaughter Ava Feldman, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Barbara Reding and brother Richard Hakala, both of Hernando, FL. Norma is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Russell Lowell Hurst, her sister Joyce Bekker, and her brothers William Hakala, Jr., Bobby Hakala, and Donald Hakala. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1400 West Stadium Blvd. in Ann Arbor with Pastor Lori Carey presiding. Prior to the memorial service, there will be a visitation hour in the lounge beginning at 10:00 a.m.. Following the memorial service, a luncheon will be provided to which everyone is invited.
