Nellie W. Wells
Nellie W. Wells, age 100, was born on September 12, 1918, in Escatawpa, MS, where she married Quitman J. Wells and raised eight children. She was a lifelong member of Summerville United Methodist Church, where she served on the Pastoral Care Ministry, Communion Ministry, Usher Board, taught Sunday School, Bible School and volunteered to dye the church's Easter eggs for over 89 years. Over 92 years she participated in the Jackson County Fair, which was noted on WLOX-TV, winning the top blue-ribbon prizes numerous times for her baked goods, preserves, crafts, produce and quilts. Mrs. Wells was also fondly referred to as the "Turnip Lady" by the Mississippi Press for raising unusually large turnips. She was also an excellent seamstress. Nellie Wells transitioned from her earthly body on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at home surrounded by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Quitman J. Wells, son Fredrick "Mar" Wells and daughter Frances "Frankie" Wells. Survivors include her children Clarence (Doris) Wells, Herman (Edna) Wells, Gloria (Holis) McArthur, Floyd Wells, Bernadean (Richard) Williams and Linda (Bert) Hinton, 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, her sister Annie Louise Mass and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15, at Summerville United Methodist Church, Escatawpa, MS. Homegoing service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15, at Summerville United Methodist Church in Escatawpa, MS. Interment will immediately follow the service in Summerville United Methodist Church Cemetery, Escatawpa, MS. Relatives and friends are welcome to the repast at Summerville United Church directly after interment. Arrangements entrusted to Robinson's Friendly Funeral Home, 4301 Main St., Moss Point, MS.
