Nanette Wood Former chairperson of National Plea for Soviet Jewry Nanette Wood, 92, died peacefully in her home in South Orange, N.J., on June 8, 2019. Born in Newark, N.J., Nan was raised in West Orange, attended Purdue and lived in Chicago before returning to West Orange with her family. She was a former president of the Essex County Section of the National Council of Jewish Women and an organizer of CASA-Essex County. She served as both national vice president and international vice president of NCJW. Nan was the chairperson for the National Plea for Soviet Jewry in Washington, D.C., under the Carter Administration. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Leonard R. Wood, and is survived by her children, Peggy Wood (Jeffrey Price), James H. Wood (Marsha) and Barbara Uslan (Richard R.); seven grandchildren and her brother, Howard Rosenthal. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 14, at Temple B'nai Jeshurun, Short Hills, N.J., at 3 p.m. Shiva will be observed at 609 W. South Orange Ave., South Orange, the following day from 4 to 9 p.m. Donations can be made to Serenity Hospice and NCJW-Essex County Section.
