SZURGOT, ZOT LYNN Zot Lynn Szurgot, a beloved and energetic presence in the Gainesville community, died suddenly on September 7 near Hazlehurst, Georgia, where she was helping to build a 450-acre solar array. She was 56 years old and is survived by her mother, Linell, of Georgetown, Texas; brother Bob, of Evansville, Indiana; brother Brad, sister-in-law Aurelie, and nephew Tiadhgin, of Indianapolis; long-time partner Audrey Holt, of Gainesville; and many and diverse dear friends. Zot was a magical, creative, brave and beautiful person, with an enormous and infectious laugh. A committed member of the IBEW local and a skilled and meticulous electrician, Zot habitually spoke up for social justice, environmental concerns, and for anyone in need: the Occupy movement, Peace and Justice groups, LGBTQIA issues, and Black Lives Matter, to name just a few. She's known for her endless work benefiting the community and her compassionate, playful nature. She will be missed intensely by the innumerable friends, colleagues, and comrades she cultivated throughout her remarkable life. On September 10th at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery, she was returned to the earth she loved and fought for so fiercely. There will be a memorial gathering for Zot on Sunday, October 23, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Civic Media Center, 433 S. Main St. in Gainesville, where donations can also be sent in her name.
