In memory of
Yvonne J. Hensley
Yvonne J. Hensley, 96 PORTLAND - Yvonne J. Hensley, 96, of Portland, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at the Gosnell Memorial Hos-pice House in Scarborough. The daughter of William E. and Esther P. Hensley, and the oldest of ten children, she was born in Portland on Feb. 25, 1920. Yvonne attended North School, although one of those years was spent studying in a one-room school house in rural Illinois, where her father grew up. She then concentrated on business courses at Portland High School, where she graduated as a member of the Class of 1938. Before she could embark on a career in business, however, she first served the war effort as a tack welder in the South Portland Naval Ship Yards. When her business career did continue, Yvonne found herself on a track that eventually led to supporting senior management in numerous roles at Universal Watkins, a major local commercial laundry. And for the last decade of her working life, she joined the senior maintenance group at the New England Telephone Company. There, they even provided her the opportunity to continue her education at a three-year summer course in credit union management at the University of New Hampshire. This was always one of her proudest achievements. Once Yvonne officially retired, however, she refused to sit back. Responding to an offer from a friend, she changed direction and embarked on a new career selling tours abroad and serving as a tour director. This led to regular trips to Europe, the Near East, and Hawaii --- and generous invitations to family members to be her guests. Yvonne was a longstanding member of, and occasional deaconess at, the First Baptist Church of Portland. This church was not only a home to her for many years, but it also provided her with lifelong friends, many of whom continued to look in on her when age and infirmity no longer allowed her to attend services. Yvonne was predeceased by her parents, four brothers who died in infancy, her sisters Shirley Hensley and Thelma Plante, and brother Donald Hensley. She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy and Betty Hensley of Portland; nephews, Daniel Plante of New York City and William Plante of Portland; nieces, Robin Plante and Susan Plante Gayle, also of Portland; four grandnieces and grandnephews; eight great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Friends and relatives may call at the Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, between 4-7 p.m. There will be a graveside service Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at 1 p.m. at Forest City Cemetery. ...
