WILLIAM H. STOCKARD
STOCKARD May 1926 ~ October 2016 William Henry Bill Stockard, Ed.D, 90, of Merced, California passed away peacefully at Anberry Rehabilitation Hospital in Atwater, California. Born in Denton County Texas, he was the son of the late Joseph Allie Buck and Garnette Lillian Womack Stockard. He was married for 63 years to his high school sweetheart, the late Myra Odene Reynolds Stockard. Bill grew up in Denton County Texas in and around the Lewisville area, he graduated from Lewisville High School in June of 1944 and on the same day enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Carpenter's Mate Third Class stationed on Midway Island as a CB Seabee during the Second World War. He later graduated from the University of North Texas with a Master's degree in Education. He was a teacher at schools in Rhome, Corpus Christi and Ozona, Texas and was later Principal of South Elementary School at Ozona until 1955. He then attended the University of Florida at Gainesville, where he received an Education Doctorate. In 1958 he moved his family to Merced, California. In Merced he was employed by the Merced County Schools Office for 34 years, first as a consultant, then as Assistant School Superintendent before being elected as Superintendent of Merced County Schools. He retired after serving three terms in office. He was a Mason and member of Lewisville Lodge #201 A.F.& A.M. and a Past Master of Yosemite Lodge #99 F. & A.M., a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Merced and the Merced Associated Democrats. He is survived by his sons, Kraig Stockard of Delhi, California, Kyle Stockard and his wife Carmen of Merced, California. He is also survived by his sister Dora Ann Stockard Sides of Lewisville, Texas. A viewing will be held at the Mulkey Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville, Texas. He will be laid to rest in Lewisville, Texas with a Graveside Service at the Old Hall Cemetery. A Memorial Service in Merced, California, will be held at a later date.
