William John Smith
DOVER - William John Smith passed away peacefully on Feb. 7, 2017, in his home of 54 years. William John Smith was born in Kent General Hospital Dover, to William and Mildred (Moore) Smith on July 29, 1933. He graduated from Dover High School in 1940. Also known to his Army buddies as "Smitty", Bill was a veteran of Korea and proudly served his country in the U.S Army Infantry Division. He married Jo Ellen Reed on Feb. 22, 1959, in Denton, Md. He graduated from Goldey-Beacom College and General Motors School of Accounting with an Associate Degree. Bill worked as a comptroller for Townsend Brothers Chevrolet and retired after 26 years. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and traveling. Family vacations were well planned and enjoyed. He enjoyed taking and sharing his photos. Bill loved to follow sports, politics, the Eagles, and the Phillies. He liked telling stories about his army service, time in Korea, and kept in touch with his army buddies over the years. He enjoyed supporting the American Legion and VFW. Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Helen Whittle; and baby sister, Myrtle Mae. William is survived by his wife, Jo Ellen, of 58 years; his son, Christopher; daughter, Susie Masten and her husband, Jamie. Bill has three granddaughters, Amanda, Michelle, and Alison; and two grandsons, Kahle and Nathan. Bill also enjoyed talking with his many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover at 12 noon, Feb. 15, 2017, friends may call one hour prior. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at The Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill's memory can be made to the First State Animal Center.
